Gilmer Drive

ABOUT THe project

This deluxe modern home enjoyed copious light everywhere....except the kitchen.  But this is where mom, dad, 2 rambunctious young boys and the family dog naturally wish to hang out.  So everyone piled into this dead end with no seating for projects, helping or visiting.  Chaos!  It's popular these days just to remove walls expecting that to fix everything...however, this clumsy hack doesn't often actualize the desired pleasant composition.  We removed the right amount of wall in the relevant places and then realigned this zone toward natural light.  Then catalyzed a seating area that orients to natural pursuits, while providing ample storage for the adjacent living/playing den.

Of Note — This house is similar to many, with the kitchen aligned next to a stairwell.  This is generally seen as a nightmare scenario.  Nah, yer good.  Most often, removing the top half of the stair-facing wall accomplishes gobs of interactivity without making the kitchen feel like one end of a warehouse.
