ABOUT THe project

This is our personal home!
A speeding teenager missed the sharp turn above us and launched his truck over the guardrail, crashing directly into our entry foyer. Thankfully everyone survived, but the impact completely demolished the front of the house.

This led to a full entry foyer remodel driven by thoughtful space planning and functional design. Our goal was to create an open, welcoming space filled with natural light. We enlarged the small front window into a dramatic true divided-light single-hung sash window overlooking our dry-stacked rock wall. We divided an oversized bubble skylight into two smaller ones for a softer dappled light effect and added a new antique lighting fixture. We replaced the solid entry door with a charming cottage-style Dutch door with glass, allowing sunlight to pour in from multiple directions and cast beautiful shadows throughout the day.

The design follows our favorite English Country Estate style. A large antique English wardrobe organizes coats, mail, and keys. We added a vintage wicker chair, an antique shoe bench from near Port Townsend, and a custom library-ladder-style mirror I designed and built for my wife Virginia. Collected artwork, glorious antique lighting from Starkey Antique Lighting, a vintage rug, and solid brass switch plates complete the warm, inviting look. Walls are painted in beautiful Farrow & Ball shades: Caulk Green on the Dutch door, Shaded White on the wainscot, and Schoolhouse White on the walls and ceiling.

Virginia captured these photos on Portra 800 film at different times of day to showcase the stunning natural light changes.
